Atkinson New Hampshire Schools

Currently the Town of Atkinson is part of the Timberlane School District with a town specific elementary scholl the Atkinson Academy. The Atkinson Academy is well known as the 2nd oldest co-educational school in the United States. The makeup of the academy was much different 100 year ago that it is today.

 

 

Atkinson Academy

The Atkinson Academy was founded ruring the depression period which followed the American Revolution. Dr William Cogswell, General Nathan Peabody and Parson Stephen Peabody are credited with founding the Academy.

Construction of the first Adacemy building, at he corner of Meditation Lane and Academy Avenue was begun sometime during the spring of 1786. 1791 was a noteworthy year for Atkinson Academy, it was the year that Polly Peabody, the Parson's daughter, entered that institution as a student. Her admission gave the Academy the right to claim the distinction as being the second co-educational academy in the country.

One Room Schoolhouse

Tax records from the early 1800s indicate as many as 6 separate school districts within Atkinson.

Our goal is to bring quality and interesting events into Atkinson to inform the public about a current topic of interest or historical topics of all kinds. This link will take you to our events page. Currently we are actively planning events to celebrate the Atkinson 250th anniversary in 2017.

Atkinson History Atkinson has a rich history dating back to before the American Revolution. The town was part of a tract of land purchased from the indians by settlers of Haverhall, MA on November 15, 1642. The first settlements were made in 1728 by Benjamin Richards of Rochester and Jonathan and Edmund Page and John Dow of Harerhill. Click here for more details on the history of Atkinson..

Kimball Museum The Atkinson Historical Society makes it's home in the Atkinson Kimball Museum. Formerly the Atkinson public library. The museum is open every Wednesday from 2 - 4 pm and the 1st Saturday of each month from 10am - 2pm. Here is a more detailed listing of museum hours..
